Furniture nowadays is made of different kind of materials from aluminum to iron and even plastic. But for the ones with a superior class, the wood is always the most preferable option. Wooden furniture is generally more long lasting and evergreen. Readymade furniture doesn’t offer much pick over the type of wood that is used but custom cabinetry gives you the authority to select the material according to your liking. But the kind of wood that should be opted depends on many factors, for example the usage and the space. A chair maker will use a another kind of wood for the chairs while a cabinet maker will prefer some other one. In custom furniture, the preference changes highly according to the space that the furniture is going to occupy. This is because different woods have different qualities such as hardness, softness, texture and flexibility. We will discuss a few commonly used ones.

Mahogany

Mahogany is most likely the most widely used wood for furniture. The reason for its popularity is due to both its strength and its shade. The shade of this hardwood can range from a dark brown to reddish brown. It is used in superior furniture making, boat making, plywood and outdoor furniture making. This wood can last for years and has the quality to defend against swelling and shrinkage. In the 18th century, mahogany became a verypopular furniture wood in Europe.

Maple

Maple is one more high class hardwood; it is usually very light brown in color. Its shade makes it great for confined spaces where more light reflection is required. Maple is very famous for its silky fine texture. It is used in the making of fine furniture, kitchen cabinets and bowling alley floors.

OAK

Oakwood is a very heavy hardwood and among the most commonly used. There are further two type of oak, white oak and the red oak. Oak is well known mostly for its texture of large rings and circles. America and Canada are blessed with numerous Oak trees. The oak tree can get stained easily so it is easy to get it coloredtinted in a different color. Oak wood is used in building boat frames, furniture and floorings.

Beech

Beech is also one strong hardwood used for making chair and desks. It is of light shade typically and therefore it can be easily stained. In America and Canada, Beech is found in a good quantity.

Pinewood

Pine is softwood that is generally available in many areas of the world. There are several types of pine like Ponderosa Pine and sugar Pine. Both types of wood are used in making furniture. Pine is usually yellow in color. It is widely used in making plywood and veneer. Pine is famous for its beautiful knots.

Cedar

Cedar is another softwood used for making furniture. One very distinct characteristic of cedar is its sweet odor. This odor makes it a very preferable for making chests and drawers as it fends off moths and bugs and also aromatizes the things kept inside.

Other than these types there are numerous more types of wood, each with different features and usage. Plywood, veneer and MDF (Multiple density fiber are relatively man made woods made by layers or laminates of other natural woods. In some cases the usage of these woods is preferable than using the natural wood.
