A fish that can walk on land, are there any? The not so famous mudskippers are the fish that walk on land. And they are also witnessed climbing trees, forming patches over mud and walking across land. These are prehistoric looking fish that they do not have legs. Surprised how they can walk without legs? They can easily be seen in the muddy estuaries on the tropical coast. The reason is swamps happen to be the habitat of mudskippers. Unlike the crocodiles, you won’t observe these creatures sluggish out of water. On soil, they use their pectoral fins to walk which shows why they do not need to have any legs. Mudskippers use their muscular chest fins as crutches when they come out of the water.

This walking fish is basically an amphibian that is assumed to have evolved through thousands of years. It has adapted to survive on land due to the ability to hold water in its gills which lets mudskippers to breathe out of the water. Furthermore, the fish was not provided with any legs, but has evolved powerful muscles to lift and carry its body. The movement of this fish engages the utilization of its pectoral fins and tail which it use to crawl and wave its body across land. Typically, this fish comes on land in search of food. Their favorite foods are insects such as spiders which are unluckily not found in the sea.

Another incredible trait of this fish is that it can jump in the air to some good heights, up to around a meter. Considering the small size of this creature, a meter looks too high. They have a distinctive way of bending and leveling their bodies while jumping in the air. This skills makes this fish perfect for climbing mangrove trees in their hunt for food. Disliked as they seem, mudskippers are also called kangaroo fish, mudhopper and Johnny jumpers due to their unusual actions. These incredible creatures take in oxygen through water stored in the gill cavities as well as through the skin. As they also breathe through the skin, the fish need to keep themselves moist for this, they frequently turn around in puddles while they are out of water. Furthermore, their eyes are susceptible to drying out for which the mudskippers use a moist fin to dampen them. They can even take back their eyes into the hole to keep them moist.

The development of mudskippers was quite rapid which made it happen to be recorded known as the first fish with evolved legs.
